Whatever about the truck that’s a very odd looking combination - short rigid truck with very limited space and an unusually long trailer.

That company does lots hauling to Manitoulin Island, & a ferry is the main way. Trucks pay per axle for the ferry. So that short box, & long trailer help get the most out of it when they get paid per mile.

My guess is this set up allows more cargo space with out a crazy long chassis. This company goes on ferrys lots so I guess every inch counts.

Still seems like a lot of wasted space. Could’ve used a Day Cab.

I think too if you are getting paid per mile you want as much cargo space as you can.

What's even with that box/trailer setup?

I like cabovers from an efficiency standpoint , but I understand that there are some major tradeoffs in the design that basically center around a noisy, hot engine protruding through the floor and safety concerns . For a cabover, I hear that the Argosy is a pretty decent truck that eliminates most of those concerns . It’s r elatively quiet, and with a nice flat floor, unlike just about every other cabover sold in the US, but by the time it came out the reputation of the cabover in general was tarnished (even though Europe makes solid, comfortable vehicles in this style) . I t seems that it was too little, too late on this side of the pond , and without many laws that regulate maximum truck length the need for a good cabover was minimized here except in specialty situations like the truck in this article . From what I understand, the Argosy is still relatively popular in Australia and South Africa, although I don’t know if it’s still being built.

Argosys are pretty common in BC, though not really anywhere else in Canada. While they discontinued them a couple of years ago you can still get them in ( facelifted) glider form, provided you bring your own engine and drivetrain.

Kinja'd!!!

The Argosy pretty much only exists these days for the Australian market, as they eat cabovers up due to length regulations similar to what America used to have in the 70s and 80s, when such trucks were popular in the States and to a slightly lesser extent Canada. European cabovers from companies like Scania and Volvo are quite popular as well along with the Kenworth cabovers like the K200.

If I were a very rich long haul trucker, an imported Australian Kenworth would very much be high on my wish list.

Some times you see this company (one of the bigger ones) run dual 40' trailers on this tractor.
